I'm going back to the gym tomorrow, yay!  I can't remember if I mentioned it on here yet or not, but I joined a gym in town for a three month trial membership.  Whereas the gym I was at last year was a start-up - not much equipment, not very organized, crowded - this is a bigger, and all around nicer place.  For the first 12 visits, someone on staff works with us (my mom joined with me.)  Tomorrow will be my 4th visit, and I'm moving up in reps (from 1 to 2) and back on the elliptical.  YAY!

I've missed this - working out.  It's my time to just push myself, but also shut off any worries/etc.  I get to breathe (and sometimes gasp), and de-stress.  Home-wise, we're eating healthier, and I'm back off sodas.  I saw myself starting to drink way too many.  I didn't like that, so that's over.  I'll have one every once in awhile, but not like I was.  I'm not doing anything too special - just watching what I eat, increasing the water I drink, limiting carbs, and working on being more physically active.  I miss Medifast, but I can't afford it.

My head is full of thoughts tonight, so I'm going to go do some reading.  I'm caught in between like sixteen decisions to make about school - wanting to go back, not sure which avenue to pursue.  So I'm settling in to my evening routine - reading, then Doctor Who S1 and hot tea, later!

Okay. Being a guy who has been into the workout craze thing for the better part of a year now....let me impart some advice.

Being more physically active does NOT work without carbs.

Dead fucking serious here. Carbohydrates are our fuel. It's what gives us the energy to BE more physically active. The idea that they need to be limited or outright eliminated altogether, in this stupid, half-assed form of Atkins diet this country has adopted in recent years, is flat out fucking LUDICROUS, and should be dispensed with IMMEDIATELY.

That being said, YES, there are such things as "bad carbs." White rice, bread, pasta, potatoes, anything that's generally kind of doughy or starchy: avoid like the fucking plague, or at least ingest early in the day (preferably with a good source of protein to help kick your metabolism into high gear) so that your body has a better chance to burn them off (hopefully with some of that physical activity you're looking to get into). Starchy carbs = BAD. Go check out the following website: goodcarbs.org. Plenty of great information on the RIGHT kind of carbohydrates you should be taking in so that you're able to be physically active and not fucking yourself in the physical energy department.

That is all. :)

I should have clarified! I'm not cutting out carbs altogether OR severely limiting them. Just avoiding bread (my weakness - I could eat bread all day), substituting whole wheats in my bread and pasta, etc. Basically I've been eating yogurt with granola for breakfast, a small salad for lunch, and then a good dinner - lean meats with veggies/salad, etc. I'm going to look into things more - how many carbs I need (I did a test figure on a site and it said around 180, whereas I've been aiming for about 140, so I might be a little low.) I'm going to learn, and adapt. :) I'm using Splenda in my sweet tea, staying away from soda and too much sugar, and Lord help me, I can't bring sweets into the house.

One thing I didn't like about Medifast was that so much of what nutrients and stuff I got was only through the packaged bars/shakes. I felt okay, and I slept better limiting my caffeine, but I didn't think I could have done much working out, because that was like zero carbs, except what little bit was in their meals, and yeah...that wasn't great.

I don't know much, but I'm learning! And I plan to keep doing it by checking out websites, investigating what I'm eating, learning what's good and not.

Thanks for the advice! :D I really do appreciate it.

Also, I looked into the Atkins diet a little bit. JESUS. Ludicrous is right.

Spent some time on the site you linked to - I knew there were "good" and "bad" carbs but the site has a lot of great info and was very educating. Basically I'm focusing more on the good - or trying to. I know I may not do everything right, but I'll stumble along and get there.

Cause yeah, the last thing I want to do is be eating the wrong things, having no energy, and wasting my workouts!

This is one of the benefits of having a trainer with a masters in biology and nutrition: he knows how this shit works. :)
